I decided that it was finally time to make a new page
dedicated to the exhaust modifications done to my own 1998 Z28. I
installed the Pacesetter LT headers a couple weekends ago with my
brother-in-law, and took the first video clips today so I have some material
to populate the page with! I've had a few people ask me what
kind of exhaust I have on my own car as the owner of LS1 Sounds. I always
start by telling them that my car is a true daily driver (300+ miles per week)
and I'm not made out of money, so my exhaust choices are a comprise between
power, comfort, and budget. With that being said, here is my exhaust
history:
-
Started out completely stock.
-
Found a Zed cutout was installed in the stock catback by the
previous owner, but welded shut. Three friends, a hacksaw, hammer, and
chisel opened it back up but then I had no way to close it while I looked
for my cat-back of choice.
-
Purchased a used SLP dual/dual catback from a cool guy named
Jimmy in Winchester, VA at a great price. It even came with the
brackets and hardware! Back to quiet again for a long time.
-
Finally saved enough pennies to purchase ceramic coated
Pacesetter LT headers and a catted TSP Y-pipe from Texas Speed Inc. I
ordered a set of straight pipes for the Y so that I can run cats OR !cats at
the track. Virginia does have strict emissions testing laws, including
sniffer tests! Hopefully I don't fail the visual...
-
During the install of the new headers, John and I found that
the nose of the I-pipe had been crushed just enough so that the Y-pipe would
not fit inside. We had to cut the crushed section off and use a band
clamp to hold the two pipes together. This is not sealed well, but
sounds great as it is! There are two clips above with the car in this
condition.
-
The 3" Flowtech cutout is already here, and I have placed an
order for a McCord MPP2 electric cutout plate but it has not arrived yet.
When it does, I will have it welded in place to make up for the missing pipe
mentioned above. Hopefully the shop can make a flange for me at the
Y-pipe to I-pipe junction to make swapping the cats easier in the future.
I hope this system will give me the flexibility that I am
after without breaking the bank. I should be able to swap in the cats
for emissions testing and pass or swap in the off-road pipes for track days.
The SLP dual/dual cat-back should keep things quiet enough for the daily
commute, and the electric cutout will be fun on the street. |
